Expository Writing Portfolio

Welcome to my academic portfolio for expository writing 120. My name is Zainab Ferozi. I am a currently a freshman at Hunter college and majoring in Nursing. I am also working my way in being in the Nursing program. My experience at Hunter college was not as bad as I expected. At I entered Hunter college in August of 2024, I was very nervous and scared. I knew from my pervious friends in High School and even from my sister, who is a Sophomore in Hunter, that college was going to be difficult and challenging. Therefore, I wasn’t sure how my first semester would go and how well would I achieve in my classes. On the first day, I didn’t have high expectations and just went on to every class knowing how stressful this semester is going to be. However, that was not the case as I acutely succeeded in my classes and have made many friends along the way.

Pre-semester reading response:

The articles main argument on this issue is about how demagoguery and victimhood plays a key role in Donald Trump life. Some issues that the article is responding to is to not believe in everything you hear or read. Specifically on Donald Trump false rhetoric and manipulations over the years. These issues are vary much important in this particular point in time because in todays society, people can either go watch T.V or read a magazine and think what there saying is 100% true. When in reality, it’s not at all true. Some people think that just because the internet tells them something, that it has to be true because “the internet never lies”. What people don’t understand is knowing whats to believe and what’s not to believe. For example, would you believe everything your friend says or your some person on TikTok says? Or perhaps, your president? Yes, thats right. Former president Donald J. Trump had made many false statements over the years. In July of 2015, Texas Governor Rick Perry called Trump “demagoguery” for calling out his campaign.

Comparative Analysis Essay:

Factory Meat has been an issue for many years. People question whether factory meat is better or worse than farm grown meat. They question whether people should stop consuming meat and start becoming vegans. These questions all relate to what author David Foster Wullwe and authors Carolyn Mattich and Brad Allenby talk about in their articles. Foster’s article, “Consider the lobster” being a lens for Mattick and Allenby’s article on “Future of meat”. In Foster’s article on “Consider the lobster”. She talks about the ethical ways of cutting a lobster, animal cruelty, and thinking on how the lobster (or any other animal) feels when being slaughtered. Her argument mostly talks about the professional and ethical ways in which people come together in a big event to witness lobsters being boiled to death and a huge tank where people can see the lobsters. In Foster’s article, “Consider the lobster” she states: “Is it ok to boil a sediment creature alive for pleasure?” This means that people host these big events or parties on cooking animals, or lobster for that matter just for fun without even acknowledging the harm they are causing for that lobster. In other  words, if you’re having a BBQ with your friends, you’re not going to show everyone the cow with you slaughtering it. It’s not appropriate and ethical. So why show people lobsters being thrown in a pot and being boiled to death. This is not right for you and for the lobster. There are ethical ways in killing a lobster, such as, cutting the head with a knife, freezing it first, or pup and tearing it. Foster property tells us the right and ethical ways on which we should kill a lobster because lobsters, like all of us, have feelings too. In another article, “The future of meat” by Mattick and Allenby. They talk about benefits and the disbenefits of factory grown meat and how from this, should people maybe even become vegans or not. In Mattick and Allenby’s article, “The future of meat” they state: “The cost of cultured meat production is currently high, but it is expected to decrease as technology improves.” This means that the prices for normal farm grown meat is currently expensive to buy. But by using advanced technology, we can decrease the prices for meat to become more affordable. Such as lab grown meat. There are benefits on factory grown meat as it can reduce land usage, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. However, the disadvantages would be that it would cause an unbalanced ecosystem and an unbalanced environment overall. Although Mattick and Allenby argue about how the production of meat will grow much faster than the traditionally grown meat. In other words, meat grown in a lab or factory will produce much more than the average farm grown meat. Also meaning that factory grown meat will make more money while not harming lots of cows. ‘PETA’ is an example of supporting factory grown meat as ‘PETA’ does not support animals being slaughtered for consumption. Nevertheless, Foster’s article, “Consider the lobster” is a lens for Mattick and Allenby’s article on “Future of meat”. This is because Foster’s article gives us a gist on how animals should be treated when being slaughtered and demonstrates that in Mattick and Allenby’s article, factory meat can be more or less efficient than farm grown meat.

The Consumption of Social Media Towards Children  

The amount of use children use on social media is a topic that needs to be addressed to every parent out there. Say a 9 year old child, Sarah, has just got on social media to check for any notifications and received one from an unknown user. She doesn’t think much of it at first and accepts the friend request. She then gets messages from this unknown user and starts talking to the user. After a few chats, the user then tries to gain personal information from Sarah by asking for her home address. Will Sarah go ahead and give this unknown user her home address or will she say “No” and immediately block the user? Now, this is just a hypothetical scenario but what if this same scenario was actually real? Children are so consumed on social media that it can really cause harm to them when not being aware of what’s happening. Social media can also affect their mental and physical health which needs to be addressed in the world so that we can protect children from any harm online. These children must be aware of the dangers on social media when either posting pictures of themselves, accepting friend requests from people they don’t know, or when they see inappropriate content on their platform. You’ll be surprised at how much children go onto social media, how it can affect their mental health, and how consumed they become towards it. Social media has been a popular sensation over the years. From children to teens and even adults, social media is one of the most used technologie out there. It has gained most of its popularity from the new and improved technical features added such as, texting with people, posting pictures, creating stories, following people/gaining followers  and much more. As social media arises, more people become more and more consumed over these platforms that can lead to a serious problem if not managed properly. People need to understand the importance of over consumption when it comes to social media before dedicating themselves out there. More specifically, children need to be careful when constantly being attached to social media. According to recent research, almost 90% of children use social media daily with many accessing it almost constantly. Children’s consumption towards social media can cause significant risks such as cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, security issues, along with mental health concerns such as anxiety, lack of sleep, depression, and lack of focus. Children are becoming more and more exposed towards social media that it has become an uncontrollably bad habit in which parents or teachers may not be aware of. Social media has a greater effect on children than any other users today. Children go on social media almost everyday, checking for new followers or new likes on something they or their friend’s posted. Like all online platforms, social media can be really harmful to some children. Those targeted may not notice at first, but they might be getting tricked into thinking they won a giveaway, when in reality, they were manipulated into giving up personal information to a hacker. Even children can get cyberbullied which can really affect their mental and physical health. Often Middle School students use social media as a way to communicate with their friends, find out what they are doing, and share pictures together. However, there is a downfall when it comes to using social media such as inappropriate posting, getting hacked, lack of privacy, bullying, and even stackers. These young students often gain depression, social anxiety, and loneliness. While there are many advantages on social media towards Middle and High School students, there are also disadvantages that must be looked out for. One of the biggest ways in which social media can harmfully affect children is by cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is an act of sending, sharing, posting or messaging someone online in a rude and unpleasant manner. It can lead children to become depressed and have high rates of anxiety. In an article called “Middle School Students’ Social Media Use” by Florence Martin, Chuang Wang, Teresa Petty, Weichao Wang, and Patti Wilkins. States, “One of the most talked about risks of social media use among teenagers is cyber bullying and online harassment, which is defined as “deliberately using digital media to communicate false, embarrassing, or hostile information about another person” (O’Keefe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011).” This means that cyber bullying has become one of the most talked about topics regarding children’s safety. It is very important for children to watch out for these bullies and report to an adult for help immediately. Digital communication can either be a helpful tool or a total distraction in school. Although digital communication in social media causes tension and problems for students in class, they also create opportunities and even jobs for many others. Teachers often get interrupted in class due to the fact that their students are on social media. Either on Instagram, facebook or whatsapp interacting with their friends. Which is a big problem when the teacher is trying to teach the course. All in all, social media causes distractions and problems for students in class. In an article called “Education and Work: Tensions in Class” by Juliano Spyer. States, “Talk to local teachers and they will probably say that social media is a ‘tragedy’ that makes teaching and dealing with students more difficult.” This means that teachers are having enough social media and are having a hard time teaching due to the fact that their students are constantly on social media. The amount of social media intake can affect students in many ways throughout their education by not being able to focus in class and possibly failing their course. The teachers on the other hand can not teach properly when their students are occupied on their devices and not paying any attention to them. The effects on children’s social and emotional status today is mostly based on electronic media. Almost everyday, children use social media as a way to either unwind, keep up with the latest news, check for new notifications, and much more. But over time, children start getting too attached and start developing an unhealthy addiction that can cause great harm at an early age.  A child’s behavior might be from what he/she watches or a child’s emotions might be from what he/she experiences based on the electronic media. The long term effects on media exposure on children’s emotional skills development significantly impacts and contributes to the children’s fears and anxieties. Media exposure can also affect children’s development and how it can strongly affect a child’s behavior based on what they are watching. In America, children get so consumed over media that it has become a major problem when interacting with the real world. In an article called “Media and Children’s Aggression, Fear, and Altruism” by Barbara J. Wilson. States, “Because American children spend so much time with the media, much of their social life takes place while they sit in front of a television or a computer or concentrate on an iPod or a cell phone.” This means that American children are so addicted to their devices and going on these media platforms, that it’s become a bad addiction to the point where it has completely taken over their lives. Children have gone from playing with friends and family members to scrolling on social media or any other media posting and digitally chatting with people. When children go on social media, they often don’t think there will be any harm to them. As they scroll, post, and interact with others, they may have experienced media violence at least once in their lives. Media violence is the portrayal of any exposure to physical aggression anywhere in the media. Exposure to media violence can cause negative effects on children’s psychological behavior such as increased aggression, fear, psychological trauma, and other psychological and behavioral problems. With this type of media, children can completely change their behavior and personality. Becoming  more violent and aggressive with others and becoming more disrespectful towards their parents. In an article called “The Context of Violence for Children of Color: Violence in the Community and in the Media” by Marie-Claude Jipguep and Kathy Sanders-Phillips. States, “Both professionals and parents have worried about the harmful effects of mass media on children and adolescents.” This means that professionals and parents have had great concerns about the amount of media violence children and other youngsters are experiencing. In which parents must monitor their children more often and stay alert of what they’re watching and what behavioral effects they are experiencing from it. If parents carelessly stop monitoring their children’s social media, they will soon see the behavioral and physical changes from their children. As children are still young and need someone to guide them in the right path. The impact of social use for young children is a really big issue. As young as just two years old, these young kids already know how to function a phone. Many educational professionals and parents worry about the impact on screen media on children’s developments. The impact of media usage can harmfully impact children’s attention span, learning skills, sleeplessness, and even their weight. While young children do learn from T.V and touchscreens, it is easier for them to learn from real life experiences. Therefore, It is highly recommended and overall important to set screen limits for children to not let social media corrupt them from reality. In an article called “Screen Sense: Making Smart Decisions About Media Use for Young Children.” by Claire Lerner. States, “Limit screen time to ensure they spend most of their waking time exploring and interacting with caring adults in the “real” world.” This means that it is very important to limit the use of screen time for children as they need to get in touch with reality and not always corrupted up social media. Children need to understand that social media is always going to be around for many years to come, but they need to enjoy the life that they have, interacting with family members, hanging out with friends, and maybe even learning new hobbies to get themselves occupied and increase their acknowledgement. Nowadays, children are on social media the majority of the time and parents aren’t even aware of what lies on their children’s media page. Along with that, they may not even realize exactly how much screen time they are on on a daily average. Parents must create a limit for children so that they don’t end up becoming too addicted to the point where they start getting ahold of themselves and post nonsense or inappropriately. Limiting screen time is very appropriate as it can reduce the child’s screen limit and avoid them becoming too unhealthy addicted to social media. When parents start limiting the amount of screen use, they will find that the child will physically interact with friends and family members more and possibly find many new activities/hobbies to enjoy. Which will increase the child’s brain more and become stronger with these extracurricular activities. Parents must always be alerted to what their child is watching on social media. In an article called “Children’s Media Policy” by Amy B. Jordan. States, “She considers the success of these efforts in limiting children’s exposure to damaging content and in improving parent’s ability to supervise their children’s media use.” This means that limiting the use of social media content and making sure that parents are watching over their children when using social media is a must for their safety. Although children can have fun when it comes to social media, sometimes they can have too much fun. Children at such a young age may notice other inappropriate activity being portrayed and think it’s ok to do the same. As these children don’t understand the risk and content they are doing, thinking that they have the freedom of doing anything  because their parents aren’t watching them. Thus, posting inappropriate content to get people to follow or to lure other people in. Parents must monitor their child at all times.  God knows what they’re doing on social media by themselves, posting pictures, and possibly seeing other inappropriate content. It is dangerous and can lead children into doing possibly more and more bad behavioral things such as drinking alcohol, doing drugs, creating a sex tape, and more.  In an article called “Media and Parenting” by Patti M. Valkenburg and Jessica Taylor Piotrowski. States, “On the other hand, mobile media use can cause great concern and fear for parents, for example, because these media occupy much of their children’s attention, or because they offer children numerous opportunities to display (sexual) risk behavior at an early age.” This means that parents are concerned about their child’s safety as social media can draw children to commit sexual or inappropriate activity and post them on the media. On the other hand, although there are many things to consider when children go on social media and all the negative effects from becoming consumed over it. It doesn’t always have to be negative all the time. In other words, social media can become a great tool for children when used properly. Such as to communicate with family and friends, help build relationships with them, and gain more personal connections with them as well. It’s a great tool to be updated with long distance friends and interact with family members who are in a totally different county. Social media can really bring families together and keep children connected 24/7. In an article called “Using Social Media To Engage Students and Families” by Lisa Nielsen. States, “Families feel connected to what is going on in the school, students can better learn using the tools of their world, and schools shine.” This means that families all around the world can feel connected with children and create stronger relationships with them. Social media can also become a helpful tool for students pursuing careers and getting their degrees as they can create professional platforms such as LinkedIn or Facebook to connect with colleagues and employers. You can also showcase your professional skills, experience, and achievements to find jobs. That is to say that social media can help create better bones with long distance family members and friends and help children academically in the long run.  Children from underprivileged backgrounds are less likely to have much economic success, role models, and mentors in their own families and neighborhoods. They are more likely to spend time interacting with the media. Outside influence such as trending topics, news information, and technical advancements can influence children’s development. Social media is one of the most broad media that has gained attraction from many people, whether it’s talking about the latest fashion trend or what’s going on around the world, social media is great for everyone. Children idolize people from social media as their role mode rather than idolizing their own parents. In an article called “Role Models, Mentors, and Media Influences” by Melissa S. Kearney and Phillip B. Levine. States, “Most children spend a great deal of time in the presence of adults other than their parents who might serve as role models.” This means that children are more attracted to other people on social media rather than their own family members. Becoming their role model and influencing children to create good habits and creating a good self esteem. Role models are essentially someone who is looked up upon and inspires people to have a new and improved lifestyle. Children need that kind of role model to look up to because at such a young age, it’s best for them to gain inspiration for the future. There are many influencers on social media that gain attraction from many young children. In conclusion, social media is a widely known technological device that has been developing new and improved features everyday. With the vast amount of usage from children to adults, social media has become an increasingly well known place for everyone to use. Adults and other older teens mostly understand the risks of overconsumption when it comes to these advanced technologies. But children, however, don’t really understand the importance of how social media can corrupt their brains when not used properly. These young children need to understand that although social media can be fun for interacting with friends and getting to know new people, there is a dark side to it. You see, when children become over consumed from social media it can cause backlash and damage as the child experiences mental and physical issues as a result. Some reasons as to why social media is harmful for children is because they can get cyber bullied when talking to a completely unknown stranger, thinking its harmless, it can cause distractions and problems in class, along with learning issues leading to failure in the course, problems for the teachers as well not being able to teach the course properly when there students are constantly on their devices, it has become a major problem when interacting with the real world as children tend to interact more on the digital media rather than the real world, children may experience media violence which can cause negative effects on their psychological behavior as they can have depression, anxiety, stress, an excessive amount of screen usage corrupt them from reality as they drift apart with their family and friends to be on social media all the time, exposure to inappropriate content that children may not know of or understand yet and think it’s normal, and lastly, doing whatever they want on social media without realizing if it’s ok or not that may result in doing something they don’t know of and cause harm to themselves. These are some of the many reasons why becoming addicted to social media can really become harmful and even dangerous to young children. However, some people may say that there is a positive side when it comes to social media as it is not all entirely bad. Some reasons why people may say that social media is good for children is because It can bring family and friends together by being notified on what’s happening and what’s new, creating a stronger bond with them, help children build stronger relationships as they get online and start interacting more due to the fact that they have more to say to someone online then in person, and lately, children can gain influence from people to become a better version of themselves as they follow up on there people on the media that they see as role models, which is also great for young children who don’t have a supporting family and doesn’t have anyone to look up to at home. As you see, social media can be a great tool when used properly. Children can still enjoy the usage of social media by making sure their parents are monitoring them all the time, limiting their usage of screen time, avoiding getting too attached with the digital world, watching out for hackers trying to access their information, trying not to idolize someone on social media too much that you become depressed from comparing your life style to there’s, and by trying to prioritize interacting with family and friends more. Children can also go on social media for inspiration from other people they may look up to but try not to become overly obsessive that you start changing your lifestyle just to become someone else. But by admiring their certics and trying to add that along in your own type of style. Social media is a world wide debate as people may either say that social media can cause great harm for children and others say that social media can inspire children.

The impact of violence on children of color increases as children are being more depressed and feel targeted. Children of color being exposed to violence on social media can lead to psychological distress, aggression, and learning problems. Social  media violence can contribute to these problems by calling for more research on the effects of violence on children of color.

The tension between if social media could potentially be a  positive contribution to child development and the risks of excessive or inappropriate media exposure is something to think about when allowing your child to go on social media. The effectiveness of these measures is important to help children from harmful media content and promote positive media experiences.

The relationship between media and child development and how media influences children’s behavior, emotions, and physiological development. Practical guidance is very important for young children to understand that they can’t simply do whatever they want on social media. Parents must set limits, monitor what their children are doing on social media, and talk about media content.

Social media doesn’t have to be negative all the time. It can be for a good use such as to communicate with family and friends and help build stronger relationships with them as well. It’s a great tool to be updated with friends and interact with your family more. By children creating these social media platforms, educators can get a sense of community, share important information, and create fun learning experiences.

Social media is filled with influencers and role models for children to look up upon. These influences can significantly help shape a child, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds to get some inspiration and guidance. In getting this guidance from these influencers, children will become better as a person and really help them develop healthy habits they may not have activated from their parents.

Revision and Reflection:

Reflection: Throughout the entire course of my expository writing class, I have learned many valuable writing styles and strategic ways in which I can write more effectively and efficiently. All in which I carry with me and have learned all together how to conduct proper writing skills. Some of the writing assignments that I’ve done in class that have helped me write better were the pre-semester reading response, comparative analysis essay, peer critiques, and the research essay. All of which helped me become a better writer and figure out my mistakes in writing. I have also experienced feedback from previous works from other classmates of mine which helped in seeing where I went on and how I can do better. I have learned how to construct an essay properly which helped me in my research essay. The “They Say, I Say” articles were about structuring and creating stronger ideas when conducting an academic paper. It focuses on strategies used in academic writing and talks about the importance of how to respond and develop stronger arguments. It really changed the way essays are supposed to be constructed. This book guided me in creating academic writings and focusing on the importance of understanding other writer’s ideas. It teaches readers like me how to properly summarize, cite, and respond effectively. Highlighting the importance of responding to someone’s argument within a larger conversation. The book also provides templates and examples to help develop my writing which I personally love because then I get a sense of what to write instead of thinking or worrying about what to write or how to start my writing. There are important structures to help me develop better writing skills in getting ideas of how to structure, become more confident in my writing skills. Recently, I have written a 10 page research essay along with a bibliography attached. I needed to find a topic under the word “consumption” and decided to talk about the long term effects social media has on children. I have thought about writing on this particular topic because I knew that social media itself was a big issue as more people from all ages become addicted to it. More so, young children who are still in the process of development and are still trying to understand what’s good for them and what’s not. To be honest, I did have trouble finding sources that match my topic. This is because most of the sources that I have found talked about the effects social media has for children in school along with effects on teens, rather than children. However, coming up with reasons was roughly easy as I thought of how young children get affected by social media. Some reasons being how social media can affect children in class, how it can affect children’s overall mental health, and how cyberbullying and hackers can affect children. Over this entire essay, I have learned the importance of child care, how social media affects children in numerous ways, and how to prevent this issue from other children.

What people don’t understand is knowing whats to believe and what’s not to believe. For example, would you believe everything your friend says or your some person on TikTok says? Or perhaps, your president? Yes, thats right. Former president Donald J. Trump had made many false statements over the years. In July of 2015, Texas Governor Rick Perry called Trump “demagoguery” for calling out his campaign.

Looking back on my pre semester response essay, I could have definitely witten more than just a paragraph. Within that paragraph, I have only written a few sentences on the summary based on what the article was about. I also didn’t write my perspective on the article’s issue and what I think about what point the author is trying to make on the issue. Something that I would have changed in my response would be the wording choices that I’ve made. I could have elaborated more on what the article was talking about and wrote more on why the issue is important, what concerns do people have on this issue, and what effects does this issue have on society. I could have also written my take on the article and how I feel about the overall main issue the article is trying to project. I have learned a lot over the past months in my expository class and now fully understand how to write these types of written responses properly. When I first started writing this response essay back in September, I didn’t realize how much writing needed to be done. All I thought of was just responding to the questions and completing the assignment. As a result, I completed this assignment with just creating one paragraph instead of 2-3 paragraphs. If I were to have written this response now, I would have definitely written more than just a paragraph and would complete the requirements needed for my response. Such as stating the main argument of the article, the overall summary of the article, and why the issue is relevant in the article. Along with my reflection from what I have learned and what I think about the issue in the article.
